The village of Pomarance, whose origin is prior to the year 1000, preserves its structure of medieval castle with walls and access gates. The view from the "caves" is particularly impressive : it is an area subject to landslides similar to the cliffs in Volterra, which has swallowed up the most ancient buildings over the centuries.
We don't know the exact etymology of the name Pomarance. In old documents the village is mentioned as Ripamaranci, Ripamarancie, Ripomaraanci and later as Le Pomarancie, till we find today's name. Some historians claim the name is linked with the growing of oranges, an activity which died out in the cold winter of 1306. According to Curzio Inghirami the name comes from the roman legionary Marancio Pomario, others say it derives from “Ripa Marazza” (that is hill on a marsh) or Ripa Marancia that is cliff on the left bank of the river Cecina, another possibility is that suggested by Prof.Fiumi, who is convinced of the Etruscan origin of the name. Ripamaranci is mentioned for the first time in a tale made by a group of Christians led by San Regolo who came from Africa arrived in Populonia (515 A.D.) and set off for Volterra stopping in Pomarance. The legend has it that one of them, San Giusto, left his footprint on a gabbro rock.

From 1386 it was the property of the commune of Florence and subsequently that of the Republic of Florence when Volterra was defeated in 1472 and a garrison of soldiers was established at the fortress. In 1474 the fortress was rebuilt by the architect Giuliano da Sangallo. Since 1980 it has been the property of the commune of Pomarance and in 1985 restoration work and archaelogical investigation were begun by the Superintendence of Pisa and Florence in collaboration with the commune of Pomarance. Electricity was brought to the Rocca in 2001 as part of a lighting project to illuminate the historical monuments in Italy promoted by Enel and the commune of Pomarance.
Day in the nature reserves of Monterufoli- Caselli can teach a lot to chidren and adults. It is situated in the centre of the Colline Metallifere. It is a territory almost entirely covered by woods which spreads over the Upper Val di Cecina in the communes of Volterra and for a smaller part of Pomarance. The area is crossed by two streams Sellate and Fosci, while the river Cecina marks its southern border; other important natural areas are the valley of the river Pavone and the forest of Tatti , which are situated on the border of the reserve. Periodically it's possible to book the partecipation of trip directly from farmhouse.
